Final Exam Blog

         For those who are just starting college, it is a big step to take and a success just knowing you got your high school diploma.  Responsibility in college is not just getting your degree but the different paths you take, challenges/risks and the mistakes you learn from. Actually implying responsibility for your own learning can be challenging at times but hopefully in the long run, you would get your final goal:degree in whatever it maybe. Self-advocacy in college is a very good skill or tool to have because without that you would probably not make it and fail.  Everyone has their own was of learning but not everyone knows what you want or need help on.  Another skill to be responsible in college is asking others and recognizing what you need to overcome school work or a problem.  Students should be more responsible communicating their needs to others instead of relying and advocating to others.  I know this because I was the same way especially since I got extra help by people in high school everyday.  You do not get that in college all the time well at least not having professors coming up to you, "Do you need help"?  It is defiantly not like that.  You have to learn to speak up for yourself and be assertive to others.  It is not an always easy skill to accomplish control and responsibility but it is just apart of life.  I know when I first started college, I was going to prove people wrong by not needing any help and be confident in my work that I turn in or do on tests when really you may feel better getting the results that are necessary.  It is a good thing to take on throughout college as a student.  Just know yourself, know your wants and needs and how to get those.  College is the time to be independent, stand up for yourself, be responsible, take control and direction in your future.  Be responsible on your behalf by seeking others and be a problem solver (think outside the box) to be successful in college and after.  My favorite quote that reminded me of this assignment is by Emerson, "Do not follow where the path may lead.  Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail."

Eight Blog Assignment

I choose Michael Levin’s who wrote “The Case for Torture”.  He is arguing if there are situations in which torture is appropriate and is it unconstiutional.  The author says torture is intended to keep harm from others even though it will not bring that person back to life.  He uses many examples to back up his argument.  In life, saving innocent people and taking those who are guilty are very serious.  Life is valuable and taking others as a guilty person is not humane.  He presents justification for the use of torture in situations of extreme desperation. Levin provides potential counter arguments and proves why they are invalid. It is clear that he believes that torture is morally mandatory and makes effort to sway the opinion of readers and keeping an open mind. He presents a great argument and organiazes his ideas.  

Interview

I interviewed my dad who is a radiologist at a couple of hospitals.  He loves his job and is very good at it.  For people who are unsure what a radiologist is, it is a physician who is specialized training in interpreting x ray images to diagnose and treat disease visualized within the body or/and find broken broken bones.

Question 1

Why do you like what you do as radiologist?

I love helping and interacting with people, the job keeps me busy, I love problem solving, I think it is fun looking at bones, and it is satisfying to me knowing that I am making a difference in lives of patients everyday.

Question 2

What do you dislike about your job?

The amount of paperwork, it is sometimes frustrating of the number of obstacles that get placed in my way, also all of the meetings I have to go to that are required throughout the year in different parts of the country because they change and update new medical things that we are suppose to know as doctors.

Question 3

What is most rewarding?

Besides the income, the major reward is knowing that I am making a difference in people's lives.  I feel good about what I do because I love what I do which is worthwhile.

Question 4

What is most challenging about what you do?

One thing that has been challenging is being highly trained to get to this career and sometimes I do not get enough sleep from all the work by the end of the week and then on top of that sometimes I am on call.  I do not get very much free time.

Question 5

What education or skills are needed to be a radiologist?

I had to get a college degree and then I went to medical school for four years, an internship, a four-year residency, and a one to two-year fellowship after that. As far as skills, a problem-solver and being good at memorizing things are for this job.  We use images and all sorts of information to figure out the answers. Also visual and spacial orientation, and analysis skills are good skills to have as a radiologist. 

Weekend

I am super pumped for this weekend because I get to eat Applebees.  My autistic brother is turning twenty-two we are celebrating his birthday there.  I was kind of worried though that my boss would not let me get off work since I working eighteen hours this weekend, but we made a deal so I was glad she said I could have two hours off.
So I made a poem about him last weekend and it goes like this....

                              Doug

He loves being outdoors shaking the trees,

in the woods during the night,   

because it reminds him of sawing them down.
In the distance,
he sees big fireworks falling from the sky,
monsters from outer space.
 My brother's ten tan fingers and two tan hands are bigger than mine.

He always puts his hands to work and play,

forever living hands that never stop exploring. 

Sometimes I get discouraged,

because he is so big

and there are so many of his dirty

fingerprints to see,

that he left on every wall, handle, drawer

and table tops.   

He really marked everything

he could possible think of.

But here is one that would not rub off;

He is leaving it just for me,

because he is thankful for a sister like me!

I see he is growing fast and changing,

the years will fly right by.

I wonder how he grew so quick-

Where, when and why?

Those big handprints will eventually disappear,

I can not bring back the past.

So here is a small reminder to us,

to keep not throw away,

so save this print in a safe place.

Here is a final handprint,

this reflection imprinted on the ground.

Just so we can recall,

and memories will come back,

of when we were small.
